Tulocay Rancho Sarco Cabernet Sauvignon
Rancho Sarco VineyardThe boss has been buying grapes from the Rancho Sarco Vineyard, located in the cool Coombsville District just north of the winery about two miles, since 2002. Like Chateau Haut Brion just outside the city of Bordeaux, it is surrounded by housing tracts. And like Chateau Haut Brion, it produces incredible Cabernet Sauvignon. The Rancho Sarco Vineyard is owned and farmed by the Nord family, with whom the boss has had a relationship for nearly a decade. In the production of fine wines, a strong understanding must exist between grape grower and wine producer. The 2002 is representative of a cool microclimate Napa Valley Cabernet produced in the Tulocay style: Fully extracted, lean, much like an old-fashioned Médoc, and destined to last decades. In 2006, the vineyard produced a more atypical, ultra-ripe wine of 15.1% alcohol. Only 225 cases were bottled. It earned a Double Gold Medal in the 2009 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

Four Star Gold Medal2012 Orange County Fair The 2009 vintage of Haynes Vineyard fruit marks the 35lh consecutive year that I've bought grapes grown by Fernando Delgado. We met for the first time back in 1975, the year I started Tulocay Winery. At the time, Fernando lived in the vineyard that he was taking care of, owned by Duncan and Pat Haynes. After all those years, he's still there, and, yes, I'm still here. A lot of folks you'd recognize their names also make Pinot from this vineyard, which is located on a south facing slope just about a mile down the road east from the winery in the cool Coombsville microclimate. Each year the grapes keep getting better and better. For those who have long followed Tulocay Pinots, we hope you agree.

2007 Haynes Vineyard Napa Valley SyrahThis is our second vintage of Syrah from the famed Haynes Vineyard, just down the street from us, from which he have been receiving our pinot noir since 1975. We couldn't be more pleased with the results.

Inky amethyst color. Rich aromas of chocolate covered espresso bean, orange marmalade, berry pie, and bacon bits follow through on a satiny entry to a fruity-yet-dry medium-full body with layer of dried berries, citrus, and nuts. Finishes with a spicy, mocha, roasted nut, and grenadine fade. Very rich and appetizing.

The man makes great wine, doesn’t charge you extra for all that quality, loves what he does, has a huge historic perspective on what California wine is and means, and is a 100% down to earth hombre. Even after just spending a hour or so with him, I walked away from our time with the knowledge that he was an honest, real, man’s man who just happens to craft wine that I got positively giddy over. As far as my “must visit” recommendations go – Tulocay is at the very top of that list. Trust me, seek them out, you can thank me later.
