Great Place - Pefect Location. What a great surprise this placed turned out to be for us! The location is probably the best in all of Napa Valley if you really want to be in the Wine Country -- we took a walking tour the first afternoon we arrived and made it to White Hall Lane across the street, Franciscan across the other direction, Rutherford Grove on a short trek through the neighboring vineyard and then over to Alpha Omega. They are so close that you can get to each in a couple of minutes.

Back at the Ink House we had a blast with the other guests as appetizers were served and Heitz showed up to pour -- although we were already warmed up a bit -- and had so much fun that 2 other couples that we just met went out to dinner with us to the Rutherford Grill after Rachel, the innkeeper, pulled some strings to get us a table. We ended the evening playing pool in the basement game room.

Our room, the French Room, was spacious, clean, fitted out in sturdy antiques and very quiet as this old mansion is built like a battleship. The bathroom looks re-done recently as the tile and paint seemed brand new and it was good sized. The neat thing about the room is that Elvis Presley stayed there for a month in the early 1960s while filming a movie in Napa -- same bed and furniture. A champagne breakfast was served that was more food than we expected and included an egg dish, fancy hasbrowns, fruit, home-made banana bread, and coffee.

The staff made us reservations for dinner the next night, and for a balloon ride the second morning (fabulous, but you get up pretty darn early). We also had fun exploring the grounds of about 4-5 acres including a vineyard, grand lawns and gardens, olive orchard, gigantic old barn, and even a regulation horseshoe pitch!

It's way more affordable than the fancy places and lots more fun. We have already made reservations to go back in October during the crush and plan on making this our regular Napa Valley headquarters for our future wine county adventures.

Relax in the sun overlooking the vineyards.. In Short
With its covered wraparound porch, this vibrant yellow Victorian is the perfect place to spend a lazy day in the wine country. Every room has a view of the vineyards and hillsides. They are also furnished with queen-sized beds and private bathrooms. The ambience is traditional Victorian throughout the house with decorative wallpapers, chintz and miscellaneous family heirlooms. While the decor might not be as appealing as the views, it is cozy and welcoming.

Okay for the price. Our stay at the Ink House was good enough. The decor (wallcoverings, furniture) were of the late 1800s and early 1900s. There were many antiques on display. Overall the home was pretty clean although the bedcovers look like they could use a washing (stains). Room was on the smallish side and we could hear highway 29 traffic even with the windows closed. However, walls were thick as you could not really here the other guests. A late afternoon reception was provided consisting of crudites, crackers, cheese and wine. Very pleasant. Breakfast was a nice spread of breads, hot entree, and fruit with yogurt accompanied with tea, coffee, and OJ. Fun room in basement could use an update -- dark and musty. Hostess was polite enough, though a little standoffish. Didn't feel too much warmth throughout the stay. Made you feel like a visitor instead of a welcomed guest.
