Editorial Review for Carmel Mission – by Stephanie Rosenbaum
Overview
Officially known as the Mission San Carlos Borromeo, it was founded by the Spanish-born Franciscan friar Father Junipero Serra in 1771. Made of local sandstone, the current church building was completed in 1797, taking over the location of the original adobe chapel. The Spanish influence on the design is obvious, from the Moorish-style bell tower to the lavish altar inset with sculptures of the saints.
The Experience
A museum on the site features several restored rooms from the original complex. Some of Serra's possessions are on display, along with mementos of Pope John Paul II's visit in 1987. A cemetery and gift shop are also on the grounds. Masses are still offered daily in the main chapel.
